MS U’S FIRESIDE/ FLOWER-SIDE READ ALOUDS! 

  1. For our first Literacy session I will be reading you one of my favourite books, The Little Hummingbird by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, who is an Indigenous Haida artist and writer. 

  2. Wacky Wednesday, an amazing book my dad used to read to us when we were small. 

  3. This is a book called "The Best Part of Me," and it includes writing from students in grade 3, 4 and 5 (along with photos) put together by Wendy Ewald. What is the best part of you? Your brain? Your mouth? Your arms?

  4. Get cozy and listen to Ms. U read Bugs in a Blanket by the fireplace. This book was written and illustrated using unconventional materials and fabrics, but Beatrice Alemanga. If the video above does not work click here (for higher resolution).

  5. Today's read aloud is Red is a Dragon by Roseanne Thong with illustrations by Grace Lin. Click here to watch the video in higher resolution. This book is an exciting exploration of different cultures, specifically Chinese culture, and examines the beautiful colours found within. 

  6. Today's read aloud is Alligator Pie by Dennis Lee with fantastic illustrations by Frank Newfeld. Click on the photo above or click here to listen to me read three poems from this book.

  10. Jelly Belly by Dennis Lee was one of my favourite books growing up, and I decided to share it because we have been learning about rhymes. I hope you like it too! Click here for a higher res recording.

  11. Today's Literacy Read Aloud is Once Upon A Golden Apple by Jean Litte, Maggie DeVries, and Phoebe Gilman and it's all about different classic children's stories. Feel free to say "No! No! No! No! No!" along with me. Click here for a high res version of the reading.

  13. Today we read "Tell Me One Good Thing," a poem by Richard Thompson with art by Eugenie Fernandes. This is a particularly special piece of literature for me because my mother used to read it to me every night when I was a child. Remember to pause the video to answer the questions!   15. Today's fire side Read Aloud is Corduroy by Don Freeman, which is all about a teddy bear who wants to find a home. I brought my teddy bear along for the story and you can too! Click here for a high resolution version of the reading.

  18. Inspired by Polo's Show & Tell this morning, where they shared their favourite fish, I decided to read two Dennis Lee poems: "The Fishes of Kempenfelt Bay" and "Muffin and Puffin and Murphy and Me."   19. Our literacy read aloud today is The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka and illustrated by Lane Smith. There are two parts to this video today because my phone turned off in the middle, but both parts can be found in high resolution here (part one) and here (part two).

  20. Today our read-aloud is Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now! y Dr. Seus. This is a very special book, as it is the 20th book we have read together! Wow! Click here for a high resolution reading.

  21. Today our fireside read aloud was The Tale of Two Bad Mice written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter. Did you think the mice were really "bad"? Did you like the illustrations? Click here for a high resolution version of the story.

  22. Today's book is the classic Fox in Sox by Dr. Seuss. Have you read this book before? It's a tongue-twister! Click here for a high resolution version of Ms. U reading it by the fire. She does get tongue tied, but only a few times!

  24. Today's read aloud was The Teddy Bears' Picnic by Jimmy Kennedy with illustrations by Alexandra Day. So grab your teddy or favourite stuffy and click here to listen to the story read by Ms. U. 

  25. Today's read aloud is Eric Carle's classic book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Some of you might have heard this book before, but it is always fun to read a book more than once when it is such a beautiful one! You can click here to listen to the story in high resolution video.

  26. Today our read aloud is Raven: A Trickster Tale from the Pacific Northwest by Gerald McDermott. It is a book from the same series as Zomo the Rabbit, which was one of our earlier read alouds. Click here to watch a high resolution of the story.

  31. Today our read aloud is Earth Day Puppy from the Clifford Puppy Days series. I hope it teaches you a little bit more about how to help our planet.
